Animal Welfare & Land Management standards

NewMerino® has established and documented a set of standards based on internationally recognised criteria.

These standards closely reflect those of the RWS. There are however a small number key elements that have been modified to be practical under Australian conditions.  To see these differences click the button at left.

The Five Freedoms is the overarching criteria for animal welfare along with detailed elements for nutrition and animal husbandry procedures.

The Five Freedoms requires that all farm animals must be managed in such a manner that they are always free from:

  1. Hunger and thirst
  2. Discomfort
  3. Fear and distress
  4. Pain and injury
  5. and free to behave normally

Land management addresses issues for grazing management for long term sustainability and holistic farming principals with the goal of developing and maintaining a resilient ecosystem that can withstand stress and rebuild when necessary.

Infrastructure, maintenance and general and administrative management is also addressed.

Shearing Code of Conduct:  NewMerino®  Shearing Contractors Code of Conduct is designed to document the animal welfare standards and general operating requirements of a professional shearing team.
