Misleading claims about origin of non-mulesed wool
Many brands believe that they have overcome the risk of being targeted by an activist organisation by buying their yarn or fabric from manufacturers who claim the raw wool is being sourced from South Africa, Argentina or New Zealand.
With Australia producing 88% of the world production of merino fibre it is hard to see how so much non-mulesed wool can be claimed to be coming from these countries.
Merino wool under 20 micron is used for base layer garments, performance wear, sweaters etc. The table below shows that Australia dominates production in this category. It is therefore important to fully informed about the real origin of your merino fibre supply.
NewMerino® can resolve this issue by providing access to a fully transparent supply chain. Please contact us if you would like help in obtaining certified and traceable supply.
* Australia produced 23,000 tons of non-mulesed wool in 2010/2011 (across all microns)
** It should be noted that most of the New Zealand production is committed to Zque brand supply.
