Cost / price of non-mulesed merino yarn
Is the price of non-mulesed yarn being quoted at premium levels to deter brands from specifying it in a wide range of products?
At the point NewMerino® certified non-mulesed wool is exported from Australia as raw wool, the cost is between 1% and 2% (25 cents approximately) per kg above the commodity price of wool. This is the cost of certification.
It has been reported by many retailers that brands are being quoted a premium price of between US $3 and US$5 for yarn if it is spun from non-mulesed wool.
This is not helping the brands to implement their CSR policies.
Likewise, it is not encouraging farmers to cease the practice of mulesing.
By forcing non-mulesed wool to be seen as coming at a considerable extra cost explains the reluctance by brands and retailers to change buying patterns. And it is certainly is not helping the farmers who are taking on potential added cost to do the right thing by their sheep and cease mulesing on their farms.
This only underscores the need for a fully transparent supply chain.
