What is AWEX

AWEX is an industry service organisation funded by a levy on sales made by growers at auction.  It was established in 1993 when the Australian Government passed legislation requiring the then Australian Wool Corporation (now superseded by AWI) to divest itself of the responsibility for regulation the auction system. Its main functions are:

1. To monitor and administer trading rules for the effective operation of the auction system

2. Market reporting (auction )

3. Wool Classer registration

4. Code of practice and standards of clip prep.

AWEX auction administration once handled 100% of the Australian auction catalogue. Today it only handles approximately 35% – 40% of wool sold at auction. The largest proportion of auctioned wool is sold through AWH Logistics, a private company which has most of Australia’s larger brokers as clients for logistics, wool auction and clearing functions.
